Chapter History

The Pitt County Alumnae Chapter(PCAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on January 11th, 1997, by twenty-seven women who wanted to provide public service to the citizens of Pitt County who live in the Ayden, Bethel, Belvoir, Falkland, Farmville, Fountain, Grifton, Grimesland, Pactolus, Simpson, Stokes, and Winterville.

From the beginning, the PCAC has developed and implemented programs and projects that focus on our national organizations' five-point programmatic thrust, which includes Educational Awareness, Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness, and International Development. As a non-profit public service organization, the PCAC has established the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, mentoring program for girls ages 11-14, participated in the March of Dimes, Cancer Awareness, World's Aids Day, and Go Red for Heart. The chapter has also participated in the yearly Children's Miracle Network Telethon to help raise funds and support research for children with congenital disabilities or diseases. PCAC has also been involved with the Adopt- A- Highway Program with a designated area on Hwy 264 for many years. The Belk Charity Sale is a significant fundraiser for the chapter.

The Pitt County Alumnae Chapter sponsors two signature programs. The Peppermint Pageant and The Heritage Ball. The Peppermint Pageant is a biennial program scholarship fundraiser for students in grades 3, 4, and 5. Peppermint Pageant participants participate in cultural, enrichment, and community services activities. Funds raised by the participants will be placed in an NC 529, North Carolina's National College Savings Program. The participant who raises the most money will be crowned Peppermint Princess or Peppermint Prince.

The Heritage Ball is a biannual gala that recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the Pitt County Community. This event is held during the sorority year opposite of the Peppermint Pageant.

As Pitt County's population continues to grow, more public service will be needed to enhance the quality of life for its citizens. The PCAC of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. is ready and willing to meet the twenty-first century's challenges by offering new and innovative programs to the community.
